Adjunctive Oral Hygiene Products

MYTH This claim is false

The Claim

"That "natural" lemon toothpaste you bought because it's "chemical-free"?"

The Truth

You’re brushing your teeth with acid. TikTok wellness influencers swear by lemon-based toothpastes. “Natural whitening.” “No harsh chemicals.” Millions of views. Zero understanding of basic chemistry. A 2024 study published in Healthcare evaluated natural toothpaste formulations including lemon-based products on young adults. Here’s what they found: lemon-based toothpastes showed significantly worse plaque control compared to traditional formulations. But here’s the real kicker - you’re literally brushing citric acid onto your enamel twice a day. Lemons have a pH of 2.0. Your enamel starts dissolving at 5.5. You’re not whitening anything. You’re chemically eroding the protective surface of your teeth with every brush. That “natural glow” you think you’re getting? That’s exposed dentin showing through your thinning enamel. The yellow layer underneath that’s now closer to the surface. Your teeth aren’t supposed to tingle from your toothpaste. That’s acid damage happening in real time. Fluoride toothpaste exists for a reason. Use it.
