Handheld X-Ray Exposure

MYTH This claim is false

The Claim

"Your dentist is holding that handheld X-ray gun right next to your face, and you think that's normal?"

The Truth

It’s not. Every dental office with these portable units acts like they’re perfectly safe. “Modern technology.” “Low radiation.” Your hygienist stands two feet away while zapping your mouth. Here’s what they’re not telling you. A new study in the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics tested three popular handheld dental X-ray devices - the UAX-01, HyperLight-G, and EzRay Air P. They measured occupational radiation exposure to critical anatomical regions of operators. These aren’t the wall-mounted units where staff steps behind lead barriers. These are handheld devices that dental workers hold while operating. The radiation doesn’t magically stop at your tooth. The study specifically evaluated dose exposure to operators’ critical body parts during routine use. That means your dental team is getting repeated radiation exposure every single day, multiple times per appointment. Traditional X-ray protocol exists for a reason. Lead aprons. Distance barriers. Shielded rooms. Ask your dentist about their X-ray setup. If they’re using handheld units, ask about safety protocols. Your mouth isn’t worth risking their health.
