Radiation Safety Knowledge

MYTH This claim is false

The Claim

"Your dentist is blasting you with X-rays and doesn't even know the safety limits."

The Truth

91% of them failed a basic radiation knowledge test. Everyone thinks dental X-rays are harmless. “It’s just a tiny dose.” “Less radiation than a flight.” Your dentist nods along, acting like an expert. A new study surveyed 158 dental professionals about radiation safety. Only 8.9% - less than 1 in 10 - could correctly identify basic annual radiation exposure limits. Nearly 30% admitted they never even use the machines they’re supposed to be trained on. Here’s the terrifying part: those low doses accumulate over time. Every bitewing, every panoramic, every “just to be safe” X-ray adds up in your body. And the person deciding how many you need? They statistically don’t know the safety thresholds. The study found only dentists with PhDs and decades of experience had adequate knowledge. That’s not most dentists. That’s the exception. Your dental office might have lead aprons, but if your dentist doesn’t understand cumulative radiation exposure, that protection means nothing. Ask your dentist about radiation limits before your next X-ray. Watch them scramble for an answer.
